Consultation
with Tribes
Because UNDS may have the potential to affect the
interests of Tribes and Native Villages, the Navy and EPA have engaged
in outreach and government-to-government consultation with Federally
recognized Tribes and Native Villages.
In Phase I, the DoD and
EPA sent letters to all Tribes and Tribal organizations regarding
the UNDS proposed and final Phase I rule. In Phase
II, DoD and EPA have sent letters to all Federally recognized
Tribes and Native Village. In addition, DoD and EPA have participated
in several Tribal environmental conferences, including:
- 7th National Tribal Environmental
Council (NTEC) National Conference in Foxwood, Connecticut
- 5th National Tribal Conference on
Environmental Management in Lincoln City, Oregon
- U.S. EPA Region 10 Tribal Leaders Environmental
Summit and Alaska Native Health Board's Tribal Conference on Environmental
Management in Anchorage, Alaska
- 4th Annual United South and Eastern
Tribes Expo 2000 in Verona, NY.
- 8th National Tribal Environmental Council (NTEC)
National Conference in Miami, Florida
Representatives from the UNDS Program, including
Navy, EPA, and Coast Guard, will begin presenting briefings on the
status of Phase II and the Batch One discharges at Tribal environmental
conferences in the Fall of 2003. |
